New Era of Industrial Internet of Things

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are a set of open standards compute, sensors and instrumentation. Unlike(consumer) IoT which is orientated to Cloud Based applications, IIoT is complementary to traditional process control and can be integrated into SCADA. IIoT offers significant business benefit for maintenance and optimization, with growing manufacturer support for integration of IIoT sensors with machinery. This will see increased uses in environmental, safety, process and mining areas Vernetzen is seeing increasing demand for skills in Industrial Networking (i.e. the convergence of Electrical Engineering and Network Engineering) ,as we see a merge of the skillsets for Comms Techs, Electricians and IT Support.

Background

Item Subtitle

Information Technology (IT) networks are optimised for the storage, recovery, transmission, manipulation and protection of data, for business use.  On the other hand, Operational Technology (OT) networks are more oriented to the control of processes through the monitoring and control of devices, for industrial use:

  • Key to the operation of many industries, such as manufacturing, transport, utilities and mining

  • Core to building management systems that operates key facility systems such as fire systems, lights, elevators, and heating and cooling systems

  • Ever expanding and varied applications, for example, providing connectivity for automated vehicles at a remote mine site or the control system of a power station

  • Critical to the safe operation of these diverse applications.

  • While OT networks run critical systems, paradoxically the resources being tasked to operate and support these networks have (historically) not been adequately trained:

  • The lack of skills to triage network issues can lead to lengthy outages and loss to production

  • Conversely, a small increase in availability can lead to substantial increases in productivity (and/or financial savings).

For over 6 years, Vernetzen has focused on developing the tools, training and procedures to be able to build, operate, maintain and support OT networks.

While OT Networks have become integral to modern industrial systems, paradoxically the resources being tasked to operate and support these networks have (historically) not been adequately trained. A knowledge gap has developed where workers and their managers have little understanding of the networks that are key to production. This course helps address this knowledge gap. Workers and their Managers become part of the Operational Technology (OT) solution, leading to a more agile workforce.

Operational Technology (OT) Networks are critical infrastructure for the operation of an industrial business and require quick reaction time and resolution to faults. Vernetzen Accredited OT Network Field Specialists will be taught the skills to correctly and safely provide this level of support to an Operational Technology (OT) Network. Attendees will gain knowledge and skills to safely install, maintain and troubleshoot industrial networks (both wired and wireless) in the field. Work with other OT Network roles to provide comprehensive end-to-end support.
