Custom IIoT Development

Vernetzen was engaged by one of the worlds largest mining companies to perform a risk analysis of networks across four separate mine sites to evaluate the capacity, stability and utilisation of these networks. This was to form the foundation for their implementation of a Driver safety system (DSS).

Context

The Analysis was to determine the ability of each sites network to support the new DSS without impacting current operations and production systems performance.

The risk assessments found that of the four sites, two had a high risk and two had a medium risk rating.  What the assessments also highlighted was that the nature of the network issues was unclear and could be any one of or a combination of stability, coverage and backhaul capacity.

Issues and Resolutions

No such tool existed to allow for real-time monitoring in the industrial space that could do so without effecting operational traffic. Vernetzen developed a new product called ZenEye to meet the needs of the customer. ZenEye is capable of reading data on the network in real time without effecting key operational factors including latency.

Outcomes

Vernetzen was able to meet the requirements in a timely manner advising the client of the requirements for the integration of the new DSS system into their network. Using the new ZenEye tool the client was able to avoid costly over estimations while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of their sites.

Vernetzen's mix of both traditional and network engineers were able to meet the needs of the client by combining extensive operational and network experience.

Conclusions

In operational technology environments it is critical to ensure connected infrastructure functions correctly for both the continued productivity and safety of those on site. Due to Vernetzens mix of both traditional and network engineers we were able to meet the needs of the client by combining extensive operational and network experience.
